From March to July 2009, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, through our local partner Assistance for Humanitarian Development (AHD), is helping 620 families (approximately 3,720 persons) severely affected by Cyclone Sidr to rebuild their lives. This project, which is being implemented in eight villages in the Districts of Barguna and Pirojpur, involves the construction of 40 new homes, the digging of 52 water wells and the building of 60 sanitary latrines. As of April 9, 2009, fifteen houses, 20 wells and 20 sanitary latrines have been completed in Pirojpur District.

From May to September 2008, Mercy-USA, through our local partner AHD, helped 951 families (approximate 5,746 persons) severely affected by Cyclone Sidr to rebuild their lives. This project involved the construction of 41 new homes, the digging of 77 water wells and the building of 140 sanitary latrines. Families in two districts benefited.
In November and December 2007, Mercy-USA, in partnership with AHD, provided emergency relief to 3535 cyclone-affected families (approximately 22,324 people). This project was implemented in the sub-districts of Patuakhali Sadar and Bauphal in Patuakhali District and in the Morelganj sub-district of Bagerhat District. Each family received clothing, one blanket and a food package containing 44 pounds of rice, 2.2 lb. of lentils, 1 liter of cooking oil and 2.2 lb. of salts.
Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh in November 2007 with winds in excess of 150 miles per hour and a 16-foot tidal surge. This devastating storm, the worst to strike Bangladesh since 1991, killed about 3,500 people and left approximately three million others homeless.

From November 2007 to February 2008, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, through our local partner Assistance for Humanitarian Development (AHD), helped 285 families (about 1,800 persons) in Bangladesh severely affected by flooding to rebuild their lives. This project involved: the construction of ten new homes; the repair of 16 other homes, two orphanages, one school and one community institution; the digging of 55 water wells and the building of 102 sanitary latrines; and the distribution of 114 goats to 38 women and their families (3 goats per beneficiary) to help them to support themselves. In August and September 2007, through our local partner Islamic Aid Bangladesh, Mercy-USA distributed 58,200 pounds of food in packages containing rice, potatoes, lentils, and salt to 3,000 flood-displaced families (about 15,000 persons).
Severe flooding in the summer of 2007 displaced about 9 million people throughout Bangladesh. Approximately 1,000 persons, many of them children, drowned or died from waterborne illnesses.
- From January to June 2005, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development funded the reconstruction of homes, tube wells and sanitary latrines in Bangladesh that were destroyed by severe flooding in the summer of 2004. Mercy-USA, through our local partner Islamic Aid Bangladesh (IAB), rebuilt 140 homes for approximately 840 persons. During the same period, M-USA also dug 140 tube wells to provide safe drinking water and constructed 168 sanitary latrines to improve hygienic conditions for over 8,600 flood-affected persons.
From August to November 2004, Mercy-USA, through IAB, assisted over 75,000 homeless flood survivors in 22 districts of Bangladesh.
During August 2004, M-USA, in partnership with IAB, provided water purification tablets, oral rehydration salts (ORS) and various medicines to about 50,000 homeless persons in 17 flood-affected districts. These flood survivors received water purification tablets to provide them with safe, healthy water; ORS tablets to prevent the deadly dehydration caused by severe diarrhea; and additional medicines for diarrhea, dysentery and various other waterborne diseases.
During October and November 2004, Mercy-USA provided about 59,000 pounds of rice and 10,500 lb. of baby food to 5,335 families (over 25,000 persons) left homeless by floods in 11 districts.

From November 2002 to February 2003, through a grant to IAB, M-USA rebuilt 73 homes destroyed by flooding in northern Bangladesh. M-USA also funded the digging of 40 new tube wells to provide safe drinking water to flood survivors in that region. Together, these projects have protected over 2,400 persons from the elements and from potentially serious water-borne illnesses.

During 2000 and 1999, M-USA partnered with IAB to provide 15,500 flood victims with about 165,000 pounds of food and also medicine.

In 1998, through a grant to IAB, M-USA rebuilt 90 homes destroyed during the severe summer and fall flooding that year. During 1997, through a similar grant to IAB, Mercy-USA rebuilt 60 homes and 6 schools destroyed by a devastating cyclone; Mercy-USA also provided dairy cows to 30 vulnerable farmers in the cyclone-affected area.
