  • From January to February 2010, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development distributed 19,800 pounds of rice seed, 825 lb. of maize seed and 407,000 lb. of fertilizer to small farmers affected by the September 30 and October 1, 2009 earthquakes on the island of Sumatra.  These agricultural inputs, provided by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), were distributed to 2,050 earthquake-affected farming families (over 9,600 persons) in 11 villages in the districts of Padang Pariaman and Agam.  Mercy-USA also provided technical assistance and training to the beneficiary farmers.

In January, Mercy-USA distributed 19,800 pounds of rice seed and 231,000 lb. of fertilizer to 900 earthquake-affected farmers in six villages in Padang Pariaman District.  Also, one-hundred earthquake-affected farmers in two villages in Padang Pariaman District received 825 pounds of maize corn seed, 22,000 lb. of fertilizer, about 20 gallons of herbicide, and training to plant and raise this alternative crop.  Maize farming was demonstrated to these 100 farmers, whose rice-farming land is no longer able to receive water from earthquake-damaged irrigation canals and thus they are unable to grow rice and require an alternative crop to support their families.

In February, Mercy-USA distributed 154,000 pounds of fertilizer to 1,050 farming families in three villages in the districts of Agam and Padang Pariaman.  Combined, these agricultural inputs and training are helping these 2,050 earthquake-affected families to support themselves.
