Relief for the Survivors of the May 2006 Earthquake
On May 27, 2006, a magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck the island of Java in Indonesia. This quake, which struck near the ancient city of Yogyakarta, 250 miles east of the capital, Jakarta, left over 5,700 dead and over 650,000 other persons injured or homeless.
Mercy-USA for Aid and Development (M-USA) aided 1,000 earthquake-affected families in four districts of Java (Pundong, Imogiri, Bambanglipuro and Klaten).
Mercy-USA's office in Indonesia provided these earthquake-affected families with:
- 1,000 one-month food packages containing rice, baby food, sardines, noodles, sugar, tea, coffee and condensed milk;
- 1,000 household kits containing a small kerosene cooking unit, a frying pan, a pot, cooking utensils, a basin, a plastic pail and female hygiene items;
- 100 Water-Proof Family Tents.
