Food Packages to Isolated Communities in Egypt

During August, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, in partnership with the Arab Medical Union (AMU), distributed food packages to vulnerable families in the El-Gara Oasis/Um El-Saghir town in western Egypt near the border with Libya, as well as food packages and Eid toys to vulnerable families, orphans and children with disabilities in Aswan, El-Arish, Alexandria and Cairo.

On August 11, the 250 vulnerable families (about 1,250 persons) living in El-Gara Oasis/Um El-Saghir received 250 food packages.  Each package contained 66 pounds of wheat flour, 26.5 lb. of rice, 26.5 lb. of macaroni, 26.5 lb. of sugar and 7 liters of cooking oil.

The residents of this isolated oasis town depend on growing dates, olives and pomegranates for their livelihood.  Most of the buildings in Um El-Saghir are constructed from mud bricks, and the town just received electricity in 2010 through a solar project.

From August 27 to August 31, Mercy-USA, in partnership with AMU, distributed 100 similar food packages to the same number of families, as well as Eid toys to 2,100 orphans and children with disabilities.  These distributions took place in Aswan, El-Arish, Alexandria and Cairo.
